NGO Coalition against Torture Expresses Its Concern over Death of Hamzali Ikromov

A coalition of non-governmental organizations against torture in Tajikistan expresses its grave concern over the death of 27-year old Hamzali Ikromov, who died on September 20, 2012 in the prison of Dushanbe, where he was serving a sentence for previous offense.

"According to the relatives of the deceased, the body of Ikramov has visible traces of various injuries, including severe burns in the ribs, back, neck, bruises on his back and legs, head injuries", - said the Coalition.

Relatives of Ikromov are convinced that "this crime was committed by officials of the prison." "The reason for the abuse is reported was the fact that correctional staff systematically extorted money from convict and his family, but the family was unable to pay them the required amount in the absence of funds", - said in a statement.

NGOs coalition against torture urges Tajikistan authorities to hold transparent and fair investigation and guarantee that suspects will be punished if their fault is proved.
