Press release: “Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty and Reform of the Correctional System”

The NGO “Human Rights Center» has started the implementation of the project “Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty and Reform of the Correctional System” financed by the Government of the Switzerland. The project will be realized in collaboration with the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Penalties of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan (GUIN MJ RT).

The primary objective of the project is to assist the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in furthering reforms stated in the accepted Strategy for Reforming the System of Executing Criminal Penalties in the Republic of Tajikistan until 2030. These reforms aim to protect the rights of those deprived of liberty, improve the professional competencies of prison workers, and provide humane treatment and respect for human dignity.

The project includes the following key activities:

– Providing assistance to the GUIN of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan in implementing a progressive system for the execution of criminal penalties, aimed at safeguarding the rights of individuals deprived of liberty.

– Supporting the establishment of a training and professional development system for personnel within penitentiary institutions.

– The project initiatives will enhance collaboration between correctional institutions and civil society entities, thereby fostering increased transparency within Tajikistan’s penitentiary system.

In order to foster mutual cooperation, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Penalties of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan and the NGO “Human Rights Center.”
