Freedom from Torture
Civil Society Coalition against Torture and impunity in Tajikistan
The action was held as part of the campaign “Stop tortures and impunity” from June 1 to June 10.
From June 1 to June 10, 2022 within the framework of the campaign “Stop tortures and impunity” dedicated to International Day in support of victims of torture, videos with quotes from representatives of government agencies and famous people about prohibition of torture were shown on large monitors installed throughout Dushanbe city: at the intersection of TSUM (Central Universal Department Store), at the intersection of «Dom pechati», at the hotel “Dushanbe”, on the ring road outside the circus, in front of “Mehrgon” market, in front of amphitheater and near the monument Ismoili Somoni. The video clip was based on principles of national and international law, particularly article 5 of the Universal Declaration of human rights and fundamental freedoms “No one should be subjected to torture and abusive treatment”.
Quotes are as follows:
Founder of peace and national unity, Leader of the nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon: “Considering supreme value of human rights and freedoms, I firmly declare that none of the employees of law enforcement authorities have right to use torture or degrading treatment by any means”.
Speaker of Upper House of the Parliament of Tajikistan, Rustam Emomali: “Put an end to torture of detainees suspected in any types of crime, as well as persons serving sentences in prisons of Tajikistan and prevent military hazing in the Tajik army”.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer: “Absolute and comprehensive prohibition of tortures and abusive treatment” – it`s not like declarative slogan which can be repeated periodically at international conferences. This requires political will, willingness to make hard decisions and face unpleasant truth”.
General Prosecutor of the Republic of Tajikistan, Yusuf Rahmon: “No one denies the existence of certain facts of torture. Tortures exist even in most developed countries of the world. It is important that a clear will to end torture is confirmed by real actions”.
Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ramazon Rahimzoda: “There are plenty of ways to solve crimes. There are operative, investigative and other ways to solve crimes through citizens. I have emphasized all the time that let 100 crimes remain unsolved, but never use tortures”.
