Exhbition raises awareness of torture victims

AMNESTY International is holding an exhibition in York to raise awareness of torture victims around the world.

The exhibition is being staged by the organisation’s York and Kirkbymoorside groups during office hours at the Friends’ Meeting House in Friargate until Thursday, October 31. A spokesman said it was giving the public the chance to see stories of bravery in photographs, as well as case histories of different families in Central Asia who had been affected by torture or injustice. He said said Amnesty launched the exhibition to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

“Amnesty would like to use the exhibition to call upon the authorities of Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to take urgent measures to end impunity for torture and other ill-treatment, injustice or unfair trial,” he said.
