Events on the occasion of World Human Rights Day within the framework of the 10-day campaign under the slogan «Each Human Right is Important!» organized by the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan.
Conduction of the events was possible under the sponsorship of the Sigrid Rausing Trust. It is important to note that when carrying out these events, the participants adhered to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan, such as using personal protective equipment against COVID-19 (masks, gloves, sanitizers) and maintaining physical distance.
Radio transmission: On December 2nd, 2021, from 17:00 to 18:00 the Mix Show programme was broadcast[1] live on the Asia-Plus radio: Law and Rights[2] on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day within the framework of the 10-day campaign under the slogan 'Each Human Right is Important!'[3] organized by the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan.
Lawyer of the Independent Center for Human Rights Protection Public Organization Abdurahmon Sharipov and lawyer of the Mir Prava Public Organization Salim Saifulloev casted themselves as experts (both organizations are part of the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan). They provided information on World Human Rights Day and answered the audience's questions.
The purpose of the event is to form a better understanding of the versatility and the global nature of human rights. According to the questions asked by the audience, it follows that such broadcasts promote tolerance, common understanding and respect for others' rights. The radio programme consisted of three parts: provision of information about World Human Rights Day, online legal consultation and the question and answer session with audience.
Discussion Day: On December 4th, 2021, a Discussion Day dedicated to World Human Rights Day was carried out[4] in the capital's Parking[5] center. The organizers of the event were Youth Initiative Group SDG-Tajikistan under the Independent Center for the Protection of Human Rights PO, which is a member of the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan.
Participants from among youth and active members discussed about human rights, inalienable and absolute rights. The participants also discussed about freedom from torture and abusive treatment and the right to adequate housing. After the discussions, a demonstrational debate was carried out for the participants, which was performed in the British Parliamentary Style (BPS). After the presentation of all the speakers, the 'Closing Refutations' team won the audience vote. After the debate, the participants discussed their thoughts and arguments on this subject. Active debaters were awarded with memory cards.
The purpose of the event is to form a better understanding of the versatility, the global nature of human rights, to increase the knowledge of young population in human rights.
2 in 1: COVID-19 on-site legal consultations and advocacy: On December 3rd, 2021,Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan conducted[6] free on-site legal consultations in four districts of Dushanbe city together with the office of Human Rights Commissioner and Association of Lawyers of the country on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day within the framework of the 10-day campaign under the slogan 'Each Human Right is Important!'.
Consultations were carried out in the Firdavsi district near the market with the Registration of Real Estate SUE, in the Sino district near the bus station of Dushanbe city, in the I. Somoni district near the Mehrgon market and in the Shohmansur district (9 km away from Dushanbe city).
The citizens approached stated that they were in need of a competent legal consultation and expressed their gratitude for the services provided free of charge. While providing legal consultation, personal protective equipment against COVID-19 (medical facemasks and sanitizers) was handed out to everyone.
COVID-19 on-site legal consultations and advocacy in Bokhtar, Hissar and Tursunzade[7]: On December 6th, 2021, the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan conducted free on-site legal consultations in Bokhtar and DRS (Hissar and Tursunzade cities) together with the Bar Association of Bokhtar city of Khatlon province.
Legal consultations were provided to citizens on a wide range of legal relations and human rights issues. Citizens were mainly interested in questions related to family rights and children's rights during the pandemic, as well as housing rights, and the students of universities asked questions related to employment relationship and the rights of migrant workers. Lawyers gave an explanation of human rights to freedom from torture and slavery.
Lawyers and legal advisers also answered the social questions and explained to citizens about the powers and authority of the Human Rights Commissioner in the Republic of Tajikistan, and about the right to appeal for protection of their rights.
During legal consultations, citizens noted that under the conditions of the pandemic and lockdown they had difficulties in obtaining legal consultations and expressed their gratitude for free legal consultations. On December 10th, the Human Rights Day is celebrated by the people all around the world. This day commemorates that human dignity is universal, and the prohibition of torture is absolute. Nevertheless, it is commonly known that torture and abusive treatment still takes place with impunity all over the world.

This day commemorates that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a common standard to which all countries of the world should aspire. People celebrate this day to combine the efforts of the global community for the purpose of protecting everyone's right to be heard. Human rights defenders of Tajikistan, in their turn, also carry out various events dedicated to human rights discourse on the eve of this festive occasion.
The Coalition against Torture produced a calendar for 2022 on the subject of 'Freedom from Torture': The Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan produced wall and desk calendars for 2022 on the subject of 'Freedom from Torture' and distributed them among the partners and colleagues.
Every facing page of the calendar contains information on freedom from torture and abusive treatment (the meaning of 'torture' according to international and national standards, the criminal liability established for this act of crime, etc.), as well as phone numbers of law enforcement agencies and the hotline of the Coalition against Torture, which can be used to call and report cases of torture and abusive treatment. The calendar goes with an eco-bag with the Coalition logo and slogan 'Each Human Right is Important!'.
Briefing with the young people of Sughd province about human rights: The Nachalo Public Organization is a new member of the Civil Society Coalition against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan, it conducted a number of briefings with the young people of Sughd province dedicated to the International Human Rights Day. The meetings were carried out at American space in the cities of Khujand (December 8), Isfara (December 10) and Penjikent (December 12).
The purpose of the event is creating awareness among young people about human rights, human rights protection mechanisms, and comprehension of human rights values.
More than 100 young people participated in the events. The programme of the event was similar in three cities - participants watched a short movie about the story behind human rights, about the history of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a mini-lecture was carried out on human rights, its principles and human rights protection mechanisms, as well as games and contests were carried out.
In the second part of the event, an online quiz was conducted with the participants on the Kahoot platform with 20 questions regarding human rights, the participants with the top results received memorable gifts (smart watches, wireless earphones, power banks).
A contest was also announced: participants were meant to make posts on the Facebook and Instagram social networks and mark the event attendance, put hashtags #HumanRightsDay #Nachalo #Ibtido. More than 35 posts were made in total, and 15 people who got more likes for their posts received memorable gifts (vacuum flask).
